US DOE backs new funding opportunity
17 July 2009
The U.S. Department of Energy has decided to invest $52.5 million in CSP systems capable of providing low-cost electrical power both day and night.
Focus is going to be on developing low-cost solar technologies that include significant energy storage. DOE plans to spread out the $52.5 million across 13 projects.
The competitive funding opportunity involves two areas: research and development into a CSP system that could run for 18 hours a day, and evaluation of the feasibility and development of a prototype complete CSP system capable of operating at least 18 hours per day while generating low-cost power.
The industry is currently seeing a lot of experimentation with thermal energy storage R&D.
