Golden opportunity to visit Shams 1 and Masdar City in May

CSP Today, PV Insider and Masdar are pleased to announce that delegates at MENASOL 2012 (16-17 May, Abu Dhabi) will have the unique opportunity to visit the CSP plant Shams 1 & Masdar City’s 10MW PV Plant.

Shams 1 is being constructed in Madinat Zayed in the western region of Abu Dhabi. At 65 per cent completion, the plant is expected to go into commissioning towards the end of the year. With an operational capacity of 100MW, it will rank amongst the largest parabolic trough power stations in the world.

The station will consist of 258,048 parabolic trough mirrors, 192 solar collector assembly loops with 8 solar collector assemblies per loop, 768 solar collector assembly units, and 27,648 absorber pipes.

In March, the CSP industry in India will consider the steps it needs to improve its project bankability and overcome the financial barriers

India’s concentrated solar projects have faced countless hurdles since the National Solar Mission (NSM) was launched in 2010. However, setting up finance for the seven bid winning projects under Phase I of the NSM has proved to be the greatest challenge for local developers. This barrier is a result of the high capital cost of CSP, as well as the uncertainty surrounding the rate of return for banks and financial institutions.

Construction of the facility began in September last year. The plant is expected to be operational by the end of 2013.

Solar Millennium has transferred its entire project pipeline for solar power plants in the southwest of the US with a total capacity of 2.25 GW to solarhybrid.

The development emerged as the German renewable energy specialist group sold the two project holding companies - Solar Millennium Capital and Solar Millennium USA 2. This includes the 70% stake in integrated solar energy solutions company Solar Trust of America.

New solar field design boosts output, reduces footprint

Researchers at Massachusetts Institute Of Technology (MIT), in collaboration with RWTH Aachen University in Germany, have come up with a new CSP solar field layout for plants using tower technology.

MIT describes the design as a sunflower-inspired pattern, which reduces the amount of land required to build a CSP plant, while increasing the amount of sunlight its mirrors collect. It allows for a more compact layout, and minimises heliostat shading and blocking by neighbouring mirrors.

Solar Millennium files for insolvency

German solar thermal power specialist Solar Millennium has filed for insolvency at the district court in Fuerth, Germany.

The development emerged as solarhybrid announced its decision to delay its acquisition of US solar power projects with a capacity of 2.25 GWp from Solar Millennium from 2011 to the first quarter of 2012. Furthermore, the acquisition will be implemented for approx. 1.75 GWp only.

In December 2010 the Phase I bidding process of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) in India was completed with more than sixty companies submitting bids. The reverse bidding mechanism that was introduced under the JNNSM meant that solar projects were awarded to the lowest bidder regardless of their previous experience in developing CSP plants.
